Information of Oleic acid from BacMet

Compound Information

  • Compound name: Oleic acid

  • Chemical Class: Free Fatty Acids

  • Description: Generic name is cis-9-octadecenoic acid. Alkali metal and ammonium salts of fatty acids are used as adjuvants for acidic biocides and as stand-alone biocides, in particular herbicides. Free fatty acids (FFAs) are known to have bacteriocidal activity and are important components of the innate immune system. The antibacterial properties of FFAs are used by many organisms to defend against parasitic or pathogenic bacteria. The antibacterial activity of each FFA is influenced by its structure and shape. Oleic acid kills group A streptococci by altering the integrity of the cell membrane with resulting loss of ribonucleic acid but not deoxyribonucleic acid. Oleic acid as its sodium salt is a major component of soap as an emulsifying agent. It is also used as emollient. Small amounts of oleic acid are used as an excipient in pharmaceuticals; oleic acid is used as an emulsifying or solubilizing agent in aerosol products.
